Signs of Termites

Termites like to hide in dark, humid and protected places, which is what makes them extremely hard to find. That’s why Pest King recommends annual termite inspections are essential, to protect you’re most valuable possessions, your home or business. Our technicians are fully qualified and experienced in termite prevention and treatment.

Termite mud - Termites make ‘mud’ tunnels to provide a safe environment to travel or to protect their food sources. This mudding is often hard to see as it will be behind your walls or underground on your premises, but can sometimes be seen in your home or business's foundations or architraves.

Hollow sounding timber - When termites consume timber, they eat from the inside out leaving a thin veneer of timber or paint. Making them the 'silent killer'. If you knock on the timber and it sounds hollow. Call for a termite inspection immediately.

Your finger presses through a door jam- This is a common thing we hear from customers as the first sign of termites. As termites have eaten away the structural timber in your home, such as a door jam, skirting board, roofing or architrave, simply touching or applying pressure against them will easily cause damage.

Tight fitting door or hard to open window - Termites cause the timber to swell which makes it harder to open a window or close a door.

Termite Prevention

Tips for the homeowner

  •  Termites are attracted to wood, so remove potential termite food away from buildings - their food can include timber stacks, old stumps, building refuse and garden decoration such as sleepers and logs.
  • Waste timber from construction activities is often left in place or stored under the house - remove all timber form work.
  • Timber can be treated to prevent termite attack, and some timbers are naturally resistant - use treated or naturally resistant timber when it is in contact with, or close to, soil.
  • Termites are attracted to water, so fix leaking water pipes, drains, showers, sinks, tap etc., plus capture water from air conditioning units.
  • Termites prefer humid conditions, so keep air under the house dry by improving sub-floor ventilation, drainage and access.
  • Termites cannot chew through properly laid concrete, so ensure concrete slab is properly designer, compacted and cured.
  • Termite colonies can sometimes be located - it is possible to eliminate colonies by killing the reproductive (the queen and the king).
